Mind map generator
Brainstorm as a simple indented list and get a branching mind map instantly. Add a central idea, nest your branches, and export — all rendered on your device, nothing uploaded.
One step per line. Indent two spaces to branch beneath the line above.
Indentation is the whole interface
A Mermaid mind map is built purely from indentation: the least-indented line is the centre, and every deeper level becomes a branch off the one above. That means you can brainstorm in plain text — jot ideas, indent the sub-ideas — and get a structured map without ever touching a mouse.
Use spaces (not tabs) and keep the steps consistent; the cheatsheet above shows the shapes you can give individual nodes.
From notes to a shareable map
Mind maps are great for kicking off a project, taking structured notes, or planning content. When the shape is right, export an SVG or PNG to drop into a doc or slide, or copy the source so the map stays editable next time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a mind map from text?
Start with "mindmap", add a central "root((idea))", then list your branches and indent sub-branches beneath them. The map renders live as you type.
Why is my mind map not rendering?
Mind maps are indentation-sensitive. Use spaces rather than tabs and make sure each level is indented consistently more than its parent. Load an example above to see the exact pattern.
Can I change the shape of nodes?
Yes — wrap the text differently: "root((x))" is a circle, "x[Square]" is a square and "x(Rounded)" is rounded. See the cheatsheet.
Is it free and private?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, and the map renders in your browser so your ideas are never uploaded.
Can I export the mind map?
Yes — export a vector SVG or a PNG, or copy the Mermaid source to keep editing it later.
